SMLR: 30 Sep

I’m writing this morning from Westside Coffee House in Logan Utah.  My coffee is the house light roast pourover from Costa Rica.  That’s all I know about it.  It’s tasty though, and it hits the spot on this crisp morning in northern Utah.

I have tin-man legs today.   I finished the Bear 100 miler yesterday morning at about 8:20.  It warrants its own post, so I won’t go into all the details here, but I’ll say that it was more of a 76 mile run, 23 mile fast hike, 1 mile run.  I think I may have gone a little hard in the first 50.  I lost all leg turnover by mile 76 – still had power to hike, but running was pretty much done.  I ran into Greg at the mile 76 aid station, and he was in the same boat, so we hung together for that last quarter.  It was pretty miserable, but misery loves company, and at least we had that.   And it was still a finish, and a victory in its own different kind of way.    And I believe that the experience will benefit me in future ultras.  More to follow in a race recap.

Highly recommend coming to the Utah mountains in the fall.  The colors in the mountains are amazing.  Throughout the day on Friday we ran through bright oranges, yellows, and greens.   There were some hunters and hikers out, and a lot of cows, but for the most part we had most of the course to ourselves.   I would like to come back here in the winter for backcountry skiing.

I’m drawing a blank on anything else to write about this morning, without infringing on my pending Bear race recap.  The 100 mile distance is pretty all-consuming, both physically and mentally, and you don’t just snap out of it, even 24 hours later.   I’m not calibrated right now for any non-running pontificating.    So, short SMLR entry this week.  I’m headed home this afternoon on a flight from SLC to San Jose, and should be home by dinnertime.
